Homecoming or HOCO as some call it, hit Radford like a blast from the past on Sept. 16 through 20. Throughout the week students had many friendly competitions to participate in including Penny Wars, special dress-up days, and games during Noon-hour. There were also some larger events during the week such as the bonfire, the Powder Puff game, the assembly featuring lip-sync dances from each leadership class, and finally, the Radford versus Pearl City football game to conclude the week. At the end of the week results were tallied with the Juniors taking first place with 90 points, Seniors taking second place with 87 points, Sophomores taking third with 66 points, and Freshmen taking fourth with 61 points.
Student Activities Coordinator Theresa Schubert, led the Student Council (STUCO) in organizing the week. The Penny Wars was an event that lasted throughout the entire week. Students brought in pennies to raise money for Pennies for Patients, a non-profit that donates towards leukemia and lymphoma research. The sophomores won the Penny Wars with a total of 10 points.
The special dress-up days were a hit among students. Monday’s theme was “Groovy Monday” students could choose to dress up in 70’s attire. Tuesday’s theme was “90’s versus 90’s”, students could dress up like they were from the 90’s or they were 90 years old. Wednesday’s theme was “Class Color or Class Shirt,” the freshman and seniors wore black while the sophomores and juniors wore white. Thursday’s theme was a “Blast from the Past, Throwback Thursday.” Finally, Friday’s theme was “Radford apparel,” and students wore any Radford merchandise they had to show school pride.
The noon hour games were a hit among students of all grades. They consisted of trivia, dress to impress, footloose, finish the lyric, hula hoop relay, guess the song, catch the stick, and human foosball as well as a frozen t-shirt competition.
The assembly was held on Wednesday Sept. 18 during the advisory period. The assembly hosted a plethora of events for students to enjoy. The most anticipated event was the homecoming court, two people from each grade participated. Some of the other events were, fashion shows, the class cheers, teachers dancing, the cheer team, and of course the section decorations. Every grade had a theme for their section, freshman were 2010’s, sophomores were 1980’s, the juniors were 1960’s, and the seniors were 2000’s. Each grade’s fashion show also had a skit paired with it featuring dancing. The teachers also had a dance party, with Cheerleading coach Bo Frank bringing the energy as usual. Although the Juniors won the cheer and Sec Dec competitions, the Seniors won the skit portion of the assembly.
“My favorite part was listening to the students cheer as the teachers got onto the dance floor,” said Science teacher Kimberly Hyatt, one of the faculty members who participated in the teacher dance during the assembly.
The homecoming bonfire took place on Sept. 19 after school from 5-8 p.m. There was plenty of food and everyone had fun participating. The Powder Puff also took place the same day during lunch, the cheerleaders dressed up like the football players and the football players dressed up like cheerleaders. The game was flag football, and this event took place on the practice field.
Finally, the main event of homecoming: the football game on Friday Sept. 20 against the Pearl City Chargers. The game was filled with drama as one of Pearl City’s players and one of Radford’s players got seriously injured during the event. Despite the unfortunate injuries and missing players, both teams pushed through the rest of the game. During the halftime show, the homecoming court made their final appearance as well as all the decades. In the end, Radford brought home a win with a score of 63-22.
