Crawl, Danger in the Water
September 26, 2019
Crawl, directed by Alexandre Aja, was released this summer 2019. The movie takes place when a Category 5 hurricane hits Florida. Haley Keller, the main character, is a University of Florida swimmer played by actress Kaya Scodelario.
Haley, on a mission to find her father, drives straight through the hurricane to her dad’s house. She eventually finds him wounded. Her hope to save him changes when she comes face to face with an alligator. Trapped with her dad in the attic with multiple alligators surrounding them she has a new mission: to save her and her dad before it’s too late. With time running out, will she be able to do it?
This was advertised as a horror movie even though it was more of a thriller movie. While it did have a few jump scares here and there, I think there should’ve been more scary scenes. There were some good parts in the movie. For example the bravery and hopefulness of the character Haley. However it still wasn’t really that good of a movie.
Some parts of the movie were boring and it felt like it dragged on because the director added too many unnecessary scenes. When you thought it was over, it wasn’t. Overall, the movie wasn’t really that good. The characters were unlikable. For example, Haley was also annoying because she had no sense of caution and risked a lot of people’s lives. It also seemed like a cop at the end of the movie was too lenient on her and was unfair to everyone else. She also didn’t really pay much attention to her surroundings. When her dad would tell her to do something for her safety she would do the opposite.
Apart from these thoughts, it seemed to me like this movie wasn’t really what I was expecting. It was more of an action movie and less of a scary movie. Although I may not have enjoyed everything about this movie, that’s just my opinion. If you like the movies like 47 Meters Down, Jaws, and The Shallows then you should definitely go see it for yourself and form your own thoughts of it.
