One of the many clubs hosted at Radford is the Spanish club advised by Spanish teachers “Senorita” Brittney Hamilton and “Profesora” Karina Polo. Their mission as a club is to help students interested in the language learn more about Latinx culture and traditions. The club’s meetings are held in room 143 during lunch on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month.
“We do activities that are related to whatever is going on in the calendar … we try to do service projects that are culturally related, but it’s kinda hard here,” said Hamilton.
The following activities were discussed and organized by the Spanish Club in Quarter 2:
Dia de los Muertos
On Oct. 24, in room 143, the Radford Spanish club had a meeting that was relevant to an upcoming event, Dia de Los Muertos, the club began the meeting with a presentation, then had a trivia segment correlating with the theme.
Hamilton said, “Día de los muertos is a celebration of the life of deceased family members/friends to honor their life & legacy during their time on Earth. There are many traditions associated with the holiday, including setting up an ofrenda (altar) & laying out la flor de cempasúchil (marigolds) to lead the souls back to the land of the living to celebrate together.”
Navidad
This quarter the Spanish club’s fundraising and service projects will incorporate aspects of the holiday season. Club members plan on reading Christmas or Navidad stories to students at Makalapa Elementary School, this will get the students in the spirit of Christmas. The club also plans on selling hot chocolate or horchata, a Spain-originated, rice and cinnamon drink.
