On July 20, 2012, James Eagan Holmes killed 12 people and injured 58 others in a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado.
On Dec. 14, 2012, Adam Lanza fatally shot his mother and later killed 13 children (ages five through eight years old) and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
According to @gundeaths, a twitter account which tweets every gun death in America, as of Jan. 15, about 900 people have been killed by firearms since the Newtown shootings. The increased amount of gun violence has sparked a debate about whether to make stricter gun laws or to allow gun laws to remain as they are.
President Obama is taking 12 proposed congressional actions and 23 executive actions to reduce gun violence. These proposals include background checks for all gun sales, banning assault weapons, limiting ammunition to 10 rounds, safety campaigns on guns, maximizing enforcement, and making sure buyers are mentally sane.
Due to this, firearms sales have increased because of gun enthusiasts. According to KHON, Hawaii currently has some of the strictest gun laws in America. The Hawaii Police Department and Mayor Kirk Caldwell say there are no current plans to change them.
